Characterization Part 2

Character Foil: George

Quote 1: "'He got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a kid. Just awright. Just ain't bright. But he can do anything you tell him.'"

Quote 2: "'Be a damn good thing if you was,'" George said viciously. "'Save ever'body a hell lot of trouble.'"

Quote 3: "'What do you want now?'"

These quotes tell the reader about George's ways of speaking and what kind of person he is. The first quote tells us that George is a person who often lies to save himself and that he doesn't respect Lennie that much. Although he mentions that Lennie isn't bright, he says that he could do anything which is good for Lennie. The second quote tells us that George is kind of a jerk and a cold-hearted person. This quote really proves that George doesn't have any respect for Lennie. The third quote proves that George thinks Lennie is annoying and he doesn't want to be with him. I personally do not think Lennie is annoying; I think he is a caring and nice guy.

  1. These character foils show the reader exactly how different Lennie and George are. When they are next to each other you understand how George does not respect Lennie, yet Lennie respects George like crazy. George also says bad things about Lennie which in contrast Lennie is a big gentle giant who cannot say a bad thing about anyone. Steinback uses these character foils to really show who is the protagonist in this tale and who is the antagonist.

The first contrasting quote for George would be:
"'Hell,no. He just scared her. I'd be scared too if he grabbed me. But he never hurt her. He jus' wanted to touch that red dress, like he wants to pet them pups all the time.'"

A second quote to contrast your first would be:
"George chuckled, 'I bet Lennie's right out there in the barn with his pup. He wont want to come in here no more now he's got a pup.'"

A third quote to contrast yours would be :
    " Course he aint mean."
